ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
I have always been a scenic painter and never really had the desire to paint canvases. Then one day, in November of 2019, I woke up with the uncontrollable desire to paint. I had an image in my head and I simply needed to start painting. I completed "THE CREEK" in about 3 days and immediately started another...and another. There is a fire now where there wasn't before and it's taking over. I love it and hope it never ends. KHL.
THE CREEK - NOVEMBER 2019.
36"X24" ACRYLIC ON CANVAS. $450.00 PLUS SHIPPING "The Creek" is the first painting that I did during this new found creative eruption. I used a couple of techniques on it that I had never used before and was very happy with the results. The back ground is multiple layers of washes, brushwork and spatters and the foreground is all brush. I used my time as a deer hunter while in Upstate New York as inspiration. I had hoped to capture the serenity and beauty of walking in the woods during winter. |

"A Walk In The Woods" follows The Creek and is my attempt to harness these new techniques that I am using. The washy colors of the background and the depth produced with the muted tree and brush images are from these new techniques. I think the most visually engrossing aspect of this painting is how you are drawn into the woods with the layered background and how no matter how many times to see it, you seem to see something for the first time.
I used three smaller canvases as one piece with painted pine wood borders between the three canvases and a painted wood frame as well. The inspiration is from time spent hunting in the woods right up to dark and seeing the low sunset through the trees as I exited the forest. I took the colors found in the painting and extended them out into the frame. I soaked the wooden frame and washed the color on in a manner where you can still see the grain and texture of the wood which i think plays into the theme of the piece.

THE TREE OF LIFE - DECEMBER 2019.
24"X48"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS.
$450.00 PLUS SHIPPING
"The Tree Of Life" is the third acrylic on canvas that I painted since the awakening. I wanted to stretch out and do a larger piece that would allow me the space to experiment with the air and spatter methods I was working with.
This piece is a fantasy piece which allowed me to suspend the laws that govern color and composition and just try and capture what I saw in my head. The placement of the waterfalls and the colors used are a departure from the realism that I often tried to capture as a scenic painter.
I wanted to grasp the elements of life with the symbolism of the tree with it's twisted and turning roots and branches. The element of water being what all life is based on was key and the mystical element of golds and metallics with fireflies and a color washed sky help me create a motion filled canvas that represents growth and magic and life and art.

SHADE TREE VISTA - DECEMBER 2019.
16"X20"
ARCYLIC ON CANVAS.
$300.00 PLUS SHIPPING
After the monster that was "The Tree Of Life" I decided to scale down the size and scope of the next painting. "Shade Tree Vista" was painted on a rather cold and gray day here in Wisconsin. I felt the desire to lay in a meadow of soft grass under a tree on a warm sunny day.
This is a straight forward brush on canvas painting with the exception of some air and spatter on the tree canopy.

DEEP WOODS BLIZZARD - DECEMBER 2019.
28"X22"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS.
$400.00 PLUS SHIPPING
The day that I finished "Shade Tree Vista" it was snowing hard outside. I thought it would be very interesting to use my air and spatter method to try and capture the snow and the deep woods. I absolutely adore the depth that the background offers and find myself looking into the trees trying to find where the painting begins.
I used multiple layers of washed and air work with wet spatters to build a depth in the background.
After the trees and snow were done I felt that it needed something more. I stared at it and felt the need to walk through the snow out into the woods. I could not so I inserted something that could.

A WINDY DAY - DECEMBER 2019.
16"X20"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS.
(SOLD)
More experimentation with motion and movement. This small yet full canvas is called "A Windy Day" for obvious reasons. I mixed up both the air and spatter methods I am working on with the use of "rigger" or "script" brushes for the tree bark and grass.
The entire painting is a study in motion from the girls hair to the foliage blowing and sweeping of wind as it blows across the canvas..
I fell in love with the unique tree bark style I am using and have used it on several paintings. It has one foot in reality and another in the dreamscape that I often find myself in.

WINTER IS COMING - JANUARY 2020
22"X28"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS.
$250.00 PLUS SHIPPING
I drive through some very rural areas on my daily trek from home to studio and back. I pass through miles of corn, alfalfa and soybean fields. The woods, hills and creeks run through them making a beautiful barren patchwork. As Winter approaches the landscape changes and the crops are harvested, the sky changes and life prepares for Winter.
I wanted to catch the feeling of looking out across the Wisconsin fields as the blue gray sky dusts the land with lite snow and warns of the hard cold days to come.
Of course, as you move around, you are bound to spook a family of deer who leap over the old fence and bolt across the fields for cover.

ICE PALACE SENTRY'S - JANUARY 2020.
24"X30"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
(SOLD)
I wanted to again try and capture the cold and starkness of Winter in a painting. "Ice Palace Sentry's" is my attempt to create depth and push the background way back into the mist so that you find yourself peering into the foggy blueness and wondering if you see something or not.
I am in love with the Winterscape now and love the blues and coke bottle greens of the snow and ice. The fallen birch gives the feeling of being way out in the wilderness and the two sentry's that guard their ice palace swoop by to see what your intentions are.

THE GIRL IN THE TALL GRASS - JANUARY, 2020.
24"X30"
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS.
(SOLD).
Another study in movement and motion "The Girl In The Tall Grass" is a chance for me to really try and capture the energy and motion of wind and weather on canvas.
The ominous clouds bring heavy weather and the winds announce it's arrival as a young lady is frozen, fascinated by the power and beauty of nature.
